Put together an affordable gaming PC: the best hardware configurations

Sebastian Schenzinger

A good gaming PC that you can use to play your favorite games doesn't have to cost huge sums of money. We will show you how you can put together a gaming computer for your requirements as cheaply as possible. For this we give sample configurations in price ranges such as 300, 500, 600 or 1000 euros - including recommendations for gaming peripherals.

Important NOTE

Before we get to our gaming PC configurations, let's start with a few important sentences. Unfortunately, it is currently a very bad time to put together a new gaming PC. Although the manufacturers have launched many new products with the Ryzen 5000 processors, the Nvidia Ampere graphics cards and the AMD RDNA-2 GPUs, they all have three things in common: They are damn fast, but unfortunately they are also extremely difficult to obtain and the prices of the dealers are well above the RRP. We report on possible reasons for the poor availability in this article. There is no improvement in sight in the new year either, on the contrary. The two manufacturers AMD and Nvidia assume that the product shortage will likely extend into Q2 or even Q3 2021.

If you are now speculating that the prices for the previous products will have to fall due to the new hardware releases, then we will unfortunately have to disappoint you. We have analyzed the prices of the Ryzen 3000 CPUs, the RX 5000 graphics cards, the Turing GPUs and the CPUs from Intel and for the last two months we have not only seen a product shortage but also a price increase for almost all products. We have summarized the price development of the products for you at the end of the article. But there are not only price increases for graphics cards and processors, but also for powerful power supplies from 750 watts. Memory prices are also slowly rising and at the beginning of 2021 are on average 20 percent higher than six months ago. A detailed price and availability analysis can be found in this article.

All in all, despite countless product launches last summer, you got even more computing power for your money. We therefore advise you to wait until the market situation has stabilized before buying new hardware. We can only advise against buying a product at the completely excessive prices on online marketplaces.

A self-built gaming PC usually offers the best price-performance ratio - and you can adapt the hardware perfectly to your requirements. But putting together cheap, yet good hardware is not always easy. The graphics card market in particular is very confusing due to the countless available models and prices change daily. So that you are guaranteed to get the best performance for your money, we have configured gaming PCs for you in a wide variety of price categories such as 300, 500, 600, 800 or 1000 euros. For the optimal gaming PC set, we also give purchase recommendations for gaming monitors, gaming mice, gaming keyboards and gaming headsets at the end of the article. In order to keep the configurations up to date, PC-WELT updates the product links weekly.

Note:Since the price and availability of a product can change on a daily basis, it is possible that the hardware linked by us is no longer available or is listed at the retailer at a price other than that specified by us. All of our compilations are only a recommendation aimed at the best possible gaming performance in the respective price range. If you need more storage space and RAM or simply attach great importance to a nice look with RGB lighting, you can of course adapt our compilations accordingly. If you want to adopt one of our configurations 1: 1, you only have to click on the link "to shopping cart" at the end of the corresponding table, which you can go directly to Mindfactory forwards.

When selecting the GPU, the processor and the RAM, we orientate ourselves on our graphics card comparison 2020, the CPU benchmark 2020, respectively the memory test.

Which gaming PC is best for which PC game?

The following table shows you which graphics card you need for which game and the link that leads you to the corresponding gaming PC configuration with this or a better graphics card. We differentiate between single player titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 or Assassin's Creed Valhalla and multiplayer games like CoD Cold War or Fortnite. In the former, our benchmark is at least 60 frames per second. With competitive games, you benefit from higher FPS numbers, which is why we also provide a PC recommendation that achieves at least 144 FPS. A monitor with a correspondingly high refresh rate is a basic requirement for this.
