Why is it fatal to mix weeds and tobacco
Remove weeds in an environmentally friendly way
In spring, not only blooming plants sprout in the garden, weeds also grow. Tips on how to combat the unwanted green effectively and without chemicals.
Be it groundweed, dandelion, Indian balsam or field and fence bindweed: In spring, many unwanted plants grow in the garden. So that the weeds or weeds do not spread, they should be stopped as early as possible.
Avoid chemical weed killers if possible
Hobby gardeners should avoid chemical weed killers such as agents containing glyphosate if possible. Use in private beds is not strictly forbidden, but the chemical agents can damage many other plants and animals as well as pollute water. Chemical weed killers are generally not allowed to be used on sealed surfaces such as sidewalks, terraces and driveways.
Pelargonic acid against weeds - only partially suitable
Pelargonic acid is more environmentally friendly than glyphosate. The agent occurs naturally in plants and is considered to be bee-friendly. Pelargonic acid destroys the cells of the plants and causes them to die within a few hours. However, pelargonic acid does not differentiate between weeds and desirable green. In addition, the roots remain because the agent only works where it is applied. And if you want a neat-looking bed, you can't avoid removing the dead weeds by hand after use.
Weeding weeds - environmentally friendly, but time-consuming
On the other hand, regular weeding, for example with a cultivator or hoe, is effective and environmentally friendly. A shuffle is also well suited. In the case of root weeds such as ground grass and couch grass, make sure to pull them out with the root and all parts of the roots as far as possible, as the plants will sprout again from small remains of roots.
If you don't like weeding, first loosen the earth with a digging fork and only remove the parts that are easy to grasp with the help of a weed pick. The rest can be folded in with a cultivator or a very narrow rake.
A good time to remove weeds is after rainfall, when the soil has softened. Many wild herbs can then even be plucked out by hand. If possible, do not dispose of the pulled weeds on the compost to prevent them from spreading.
Prevent overgrowth by mulching
A great way to contain weed growth is through mulching. This makes it difficult for the unwanted herbs to settle. For example, lawn cuttings or bark mulch are suitable for mulching; Before mulching, it is essential to apply a long-term fertilizer, for example in the form of horn shavings.
Plant vigorous perennials
Dense planting with rapidly growing ground cover such as cranesbill, bergenia or fern has a similar effect as mulching. They spread rapidly. The wild herbs then do not get enough light to grow well.
Remove weeds in joints
The best way to remove weeds in the joints of pavement or terrace slabs is to use a joint scraper and wire brush. However, this work is quite time consuming. It is faster, but less environmentally friendly because of the CO2 emissions, with a flame device that burns the weeds. High-pressure cleaners are an alternative, but they are relatively expensive. It is cheaper to use hot water: simply bring to the boil and pour onto the affected joints. From a water temperature of around 50 degrees, the cells are destroyed and the plants collapse.
Making fertilizer from weeds
Ground elder, horsetail and nettle are among the particularly widespread weeds. A liquid thinner for garden and balcony plants can be made from them without much effort. Simply put the herbs in a bucket, fill up with water and let ferment for about three weeks, stirring every few days. Dilute the finished fertilizer liquid in a ratio of approximately 1:10 with water.
Delicious alternative: just eat the weeds
But wild herbs don't always have to be a nuisance. Many of them, such as dandelion, ground elder or chickweed, are edible and rich in vitamins and minerals. Instead of pulling weeds, it's time to collect delicious wild herbs for a fresh salad or smoothie.
